Surviving the Holiday Season’s Stressors

Making a list and checking it twice. No, not Santa Claus: YOU and anyone else who has become the default holiday magic maker.

From trips to the grocery store to buying (and wrapping gifts) to gatherings and school concerts, this time of year can pack on the pressure. So, what can you actually do to protect your peace and overall health?

Some of these suggestions may seem easier said than done, but they’re worth a try:

  • Make the lists: Writing everything truly can help you organize your plans and your thoughts and make decisions about what’s possible.
  • Delegate to the elves: Use that list and start assigning ownership of different items to people in your orbit. Earn their buy-in by giving them the gift of your trust: “I trust you to shop for your dad,” or “I trust you to make the green bean casserole.” If they fail, they fail. It’s a learning lesson for everyone, because it’s important for all involved to learn that one person can’t do it all.
  • Take time for yourself: Yes, you’re busy, but your brain needs a break. Go for an extra walk, make time for an extra gym day, simply shut yourself in a room for 5 or 10 minutes to read a book or just close your eyes away from everyone.
  • Avoid substances: ‘Tis the season for indulging, and it’ll take the edge off, right? Wrong. Alcohol and drugs can easily lead to other problems.
  • Help others when you can: Making a point to donate time or money when you can, even if it’s just a little bit, can boost your overall mood and enjoyment of the season.
  • Talk to a mental health professional: Scheduling appointments with an expert, like the providers here at Rural Psychiatry Associates, can help you navigate this time of year. Share what’s causing you stress or anxiety or depression. A therapist can help you work through those feelings and create a game plan to get you through the days and weeks ahead. This is especially true if this is your first holiday season without a loved one.

Take action now before “Ho, ho, ho!” turns into “No, no, no!”. You and your mental health matter.

Schedule an appointment with our providers today and be seen in a matter of days, not weeks.
