How Does Insurance Work with Mental Health Care?

Does my health insurance plan cover mental healthcare? This question is a primary reason why some people put off getting professional help.

Simple Answer: Yes

With most insurance plans, mental health care is covered, but there is likely some level of expense for the patient.

How Can I Find Out About My Plan’s Mental Health Care Benefits?

  1. Check with your health insurance provider: Before your first appointment, it’s wise to check with your health insurance provider to see what and how much they cover.

In most cases, patients are required to pay a co-pay. Sometimes insurers set limits as to how many visits an individual patient can schedule a year.
  2. Investigate how your insurance provider defines “In-Network”: If a medical provider is considered In-Network, that means a contract has been made between the health care provider and the insurance plan. This agreement means you’ll pay a lower cost for your visits.

If the mental health provider is considered Out-of-Network, you will pay more out of pocket for your sessions, sometimes even full price.
  3. Rural Psychiatry Associates accepts coverage from several health insurance providers, including but not limited to:
    1. BlueCross BlueShield
    2. Health Partners
    3. Medicaid
    4. Medicare
    5. Sanford Health
    6. Tricare
    7. Ucare
    8. Medica
    9. United Healthcare
    10. Humana
    11. Cigna
    12. PrimeWest Health

Important: If your health insurance plan does not include Rural Psychiatry Associates in their network, let us know. We can make a request to change that!

How Do I Submit My Claim to My Health Insurance Provider?

The staff at most medical clinics will take care of filing the appointment claim to your insurance provider.

If you need to do this yourself, your insurer’s website will have a ‘medical claim form’ to fill out. You will likely need to submit an itemized bill that shows:

  • Date of service
  • Codes
  • Provider information
  • Charges
